Making fine seams on light synthetic fabrics.

You’ve bought a wonderful, often expensive, light fabric but can’t get a neat seam. Have you tried to sew on light synthetic fabrics but couldn’t get the seam right?

Here are some tips to help you make better seams on light fabrics.
If the fabric frays while sewing light synthetic fabrics, you will need to use a different type of needle. In the Telestia Sewing course, under needles, you will be able to see the different needles available and their functions.

  1. In this case, you will need to use a ball type needle Number 75, (this is a needle with a small ball at the tip, it is not only a round needle). The small ball at the tip of the needle helps to locate the hole in the weave of the fabric and doesn’t allow let it to fray.
  2. If after you make this change the fabric still continues to fray, you can try to sew with a fine piece of paper underneath, and tear it away once you have sewn.
The reason for this is that the feed dog on your machine should be lifted higher, so that it doesn’t pull the fabric. Alternatively, a machine mechanic could help you to lift the feed dog, if such a setting is not available on your sewing machine.

Sewing is a key skill in garment creation!

Making clothes that fit well is not a simple as many might think. Indeed the first step is the right pattern for the style.

So you’ve managed to make a good pattern but how do you actually put the fabric pieces together?
When you move on to sewing, one needs to make a number of choices that can greatly influence the final outcome.

What to consider when starting to make-up your final garment:

  1. Select the appropriate fabric for the style.
  2. Select the suitable seams for each case.
  3. Finding the right needle for the fabric can also be tricky.
  4. Determining the steps of the assembly process and how to put the garment together.
  5. Many bespoke tailored outfits require suitable lining and interlining.
  6. Finally, pressing is very important and can greatly contribute to the final appearance of the garment.

All these and much more, contribute to making up a garment of good fit and appearance.

Tips for good fit: Often it is useful to make a sample in toile or other fabric, similar to your choice for the final garment, in order to ensure the fit and style interpretation of the pattern.
