What makes for Good Fashion Design?

Do you have great design ideas but find it difficult to draw them? Fashion Drawing is a key skill in Garment Creation. It allows you to express your ideas visually and communicate them to clients and colleagues.

Make designs that can be made into beautiful garments.

A good Fashion Designer knows how to draw, and present their ideas in a way that is attractive and exciting, but also realistic and technically correct. One common pitfall for young designers is creating unrealistic designs that cannot be made up into ’real’ garments.

A good Fashion Designer must know how to create great design ideas that can also be technically implemented and realised into actual beautiful garments.

At eTelestia you can learn all the steps of the Product Development Cycle from how a garment is designed, how it is drafted and made-up as well as how to communicate this on paper.

How to develop your own Fashion Drawing Style!

The dream of all Fashion Designers is to create their own style that will make an impression and promote their work. To be creative in fashion design one needs to understand the basic principles of what one is designing.
The Creative Fashion Designer must:

• know the forms and their relationship, i.e. the figure and materials to be used
• know the desired function of the design, i.e. the occasion to be worn is it for sports, for evening wear or work wear or winter summer etc.
• know the meaning, the experience of the wearer i.e. is it a fashion item, is it a traditional item, is it a uniform etc. How do we want the person wearing this item to feel…?

Creating a unique style in Fashion is a knowledgeable process that requires expert know-hows and it needs to be well thought out.

Creative Fashion Design has little to do with being talented in drawing as many might thinkg. But itIt has more to do with understanding the basic principles of fashion design, which are: form, function & meaning, and knowing how to put these principles together.

eTelestia can help you acquire the skills to become creative and portray your ideas visually.

How to realise a Fashion Design Project!

Very often Fashion Designers are given a brief of requirements that they need to study, in order to prepare and deliver their Fashion Design Creation.
If you are a freelance designer, you may be the ‘initiator’ of such a brief yourself.

The basic points to look out in a Fashion Design Brief are to:

– understand explicitly what is asked of you;
– know your deadline;
– breakdown your work in tasks – make an ordered list;
– study and make a thorough research before starting your work, so that you don’t miss out anything or have to do things twice;
– manage your time – manage your work;
– be decisive and offer choices.

eTelestia online courses teach you not only the Fashion Design skills, but through the projects and assignments, how to manage your time and present your work professionally. This is an important success factor in the fashion industry that is so competitive and so dependent on time and seasons.

What do we Often Forget about Sewing Curves?

What We Often Forget about Sewing Curves

Curves need to be sewn as curves!

Sewing nice and clean seams is very critical in the final appearance of the garment. It is not enough to make the stitch on the sewing machine.
The way the fabric is handled while sewing, plays a great role in how the garment will hang at the end.

When sewing curves, most people tend to straighten the fabric and sew curves as if they were straight lines. This may cause the fabric to fray and distort the final fit of the garment.

  1. A curved line joining two points is longer in length than a straight line. If you are trying this for the first time, use pins to keep the shape of the curve or tacking stitches, to give you a guide of the curved sewing line you need to follow.
  2. Then, stitch slowly around the curved seam, always keeping the same distance between your seam allowance and the presser foot. These steps will help you sew curves that look and feel better.

Our last tip: practice makes perfect!

How to sew on light synthetic fabrics

Making fine seams on light synthetic fabrics.

You’ve bought a wonderful, often expensive, light fabric but can’t get a neat seam. Have you tried to sew on light synthetic fabrics but couldn’t get the seam right?

Here are some tips to help you make better seams on light fabrics.
If the fabric frays while sewing light synthetic fabrics, you will need to use a different type of needle. In the Telestia Sewing course, under needles, you will be able to see the different needles available and their functions.

  1. In this case, you will need to use a ball type needle Number 75, (this is a needle with a small ball at the tip, it is not only a round needle). The small ball at the tip of the needle helps to locate the hole in the weave of the fabric and doesn’t allow let it to fray.
  2. If after you make this change the fabric still continues to fray, you can try to sew with a fine piece of paper underneath, and tear it away once you have sewn.
    The reason for this is that the feed dog on your machine should be lifted higher, so that it doesn’t pull the fabric. Alternatively, a machine mechanic could help you to lift the feed dog, if such a setting is not available on your sewing machine.

Sewing is a key skill in making beautiful garments

Sewing is a key skill in garment creation!

Making clothes that fit well is not a simple as many might think. Indeed the first step is the right pattern for the style.

So you’ve managed to make a good pattern but how do you actually put the fabric pieces together?
When you move on to sewing, one needs to make a number of choices that can greatly influence the final outcome.

What to consider when starting to make-up your final garment:

  1. Select the appropriate fabric for the style.
  2. Select the suitable seams for each case.
  3. Finding the right needle for the fabric can also be tricky.
  4. Determining the steps of the assembly process and how to put the garment together.
  5. Many bespoke tailored outfits require suitable lining and interlining.
  6. Finally, pressing is very important and can greatly contribute to the final appearance of the garment.

All these and much more, contribute to making up a garment of good fit and appearance.

Tips for good fit: Often it is useful to make a sample in toile or other fabric, similar to your choice for the final garment, in order to ensure the fit and style interpretation of the pattern.
